Amazon.co.uk Review Since her maiden single, "Dreams", debuted at No. 1 in 1997, Gabrielle has gone from strength to strength releasing a string of soulful hits--as featured on this compilation. From the tearjerker "Out of Reach" (from Bridget Jones's Diary) to her recent Top 10 hit "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)" and her fantastic cover of the Dionne Warwick classic "Walk On By", Gabrielle opts for deeply felt music which, she has admitted, often reflects on her own life. Also included in this selection is "If You Ever" (featuring E17) and the wonderfully positive "Rise" taken from the album of the same name which heralded her re-establishment as one of the UK's most successful singer/songwriters. --Norma Powell

The rise & rise of Gabrielle June 17, 2004 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
Gabrielle will claim herself that she is nota soul singer as she simply doesn't possess the voice to be one. But she is a good solid and consistant performer who has churned out some really nice tracks in the last 10 years.I'm into Rnb/Soul/Hip Hop, but I have no problem saying that I own this really good set of songs. Her music has never been groundbreaking, but has always been good. "Dreams" is her signature track, and most people's favourite Gabrielle track. I know it is mine. Its her story. It what she is about. Its a perfect track and one which she will always be able to say is a "classic". This track will get played on radio in another 10 years time. "Going Nowhere" is a track with that 90's feel which is catchy but its track 3 "I Wish" which I love. Its about someone in her record company she fancied. Its a perfect song for someone you like, and her lyrics are what most of us think of in that situation. Its tracks like this that make Gabrielle not a mega star but a real woman with something to say. "Because of you" and "Forget about the world" are two sweet track. The latter being more deep about a friend of hers who was a lesbien, whose parents weren't too happy. Great Stuff. "Give Me A little more time" is classic Gabrille. Its her sound. "If Your Really Cared" is a heart wrenching number, which has some fantastic guitar rifts, and a track which only her voice could make sound so real. She does a cover of the classic Dionne Warwick track written by the legend that is Burt Bacharach "Walk On By". Its a great effort and one you wont be skipping. Sunshine was the first single to be lifted from the Rise album. Another beautiful track. The song "Rise" was the killer track that went to number one, and really purt her firmly on the map. Still gets lots and lots of airplay today and will for many years to come. Ive nearly forgot to mention the absolute classic duet with East 17 "If You Ever". This track was superb when it was released all those years ago - and it still is today. Newer tracks such as "When A Woman", "Should I stay" and "Don't Need the sun to shine" are all included, which are all welcomed. Gabrielle will never have the superstar status that some have, but I think that she really doesn't care and is happy to be making music people enjoy. This set is easy listening and very enjoyable.
stuff of dreams June 16, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
An amazing collection of Gabrielle's hits over the years, it seems Dreams truly can come true for the Hackney-born artist who has had her fair share of troubles in her life. Since her #1 debut with Dreams, she has continued to release meaningful music that appeals to the masses. Her covers include Dionne Warwick's 'Walk On By' and Jodeci's 'If You Ever' with East 17. Also on this album is one of my favourite releases by her, 'Give Me A Little More Time' and other amazing tracks like 'Forget About The World', 'Sunshine', the uplifting 'Rise' (which samples Bob Dylans' Knocking on Heavens Door and comes with his own seal of approval!) and 'When A Woman'. Of course, the album wouldn't be complete without including the tear-jerkers, 'Should I Stay' and 'Out of Reach'. Reflective and touching, Gabrielle's ballads reach the hearts of her adoring fans because they are so personal and many of her listeners can relate to them. An overall exellent album. A must buy.

Good consistant quality music December 14, 2001 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
I wasn't too surprised to realise that I could actually listen to virtually the whole album without switching tracks. The album starts of with lively tunes until we gradually come closer to her current work. There is quite a change, as her songs seem to become slower, more sensual and soothing to listen. Although, there are some poor tracks including her duet with Brian Harvey and the annoying 'When a Woman'. You have to take your hat of to her. She has become the most successful black British artist, with the most No.1's and top 10 hits. I think she's still going strong.
soulful car music November 26, 2001 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
A suberb collection of thought envoking tunes to soothe you - while at the same time making you tap your feet in rhythm. I played this all the way through on a long car journey recently, and found the unique mix of soul and R&B/dance a fascinating blend. One minute you are remiscising about the old days and perhaps old loves - and the next you are saying to yourself "come on - it's time to move on - there's so much more to enjoy in life". In fact, it starts with the melodic 'Dreams'- which really sums the whole collection up. The revamp of 'Walk on by' definately competes with the original. Gabrielle may not be the hotest property around in terms of looks and sex appeal, but she certainly can sing -and each track is well produced and recorded in a way that makes you feel good. And she is certainly respected in the music business - with modern day classics like 'Out of reach', is there any wonder?. Great car music!!
