This reissue documents one of the more curious careers in country music. Both 1978's White Mansions and 1980's The Legend of Jesse James are Southern song cycles that were conceived by England's own Paul Kennerley, then an unknown songwriter who somehow recruited a high-profile cast for each. A Civil War saga from the Southern perspective, White Mansions suffers from caricature and cliché but benefits from signature contributions by Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter and Eric Clapton. Jesse James has more focus and narrative momentum, with Levon Helm, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris in lead roles. Though the albums are more noteworthy for artistic ambition than memorable material, Kennerley subsequently became a successful Nashville songwriter and Harris's husband from 1985 to 1993. --Don McLeese

I can't tell you how many copies of this album (what's that?? some may ask) when it was first released, so great was my love for it. I gifted friends and family because of how it moved me, a southerner with no axe to grind. The music, the lyrics, the narratives, and the songsters remain some of my favorites. For the country and rock and historically-inclined, this is a must-buy. The only problem with having this as a CD is that the entire album booklet is not avilable, as it was with the original lp.

Above all other albums, this was the one that I craved on CD. My dad bought this album in the early 80's and he played it to death when I was a child, hence it was one of my earliest musical influences. Needless to say the vinyl record he originally bought has gone to the big record shop in the sky, thanks to the availability of the album on CD. I actually wrote to AMI recordings to ask if the album was available on cd years ago, so keen was I get get my hands on it. This album is brilliant in every way, a real mix of music and narrative from the hauntingly beautiful "story to tell" which in my opinion could never last long enough, to the manic "Southern Boys". All the tracks run sequentially and tell a story from different sides of the American Civil War. Other stand out tracks include "Dixie Hold On", "They laid waste to our lands","The Union Mare & Confederate grey" and the stunning "Kentucky Racehorse". This album will always remind me of my childhood, and happy memories. A musical triumph...go on do yourself a favour...the best money you'll ever spend.

White Mansions was played to me as a child in the 80's. Back then I thought it was just another country music collection that my parents were mad over. I have just bought this for my Dad's Christmas present and cannot wait to see his face, as his taped version is wearing very thin. The collection is basically a story of suffering in war between North and South America. Good Story and music put well together. Nice to see Eric Clapton was involved in this.

I first aquired White Mansions on vinyl in the late 80's. I then got it on CD just a few years ago as the vinyl is nearly worn smooth!! I have just bought another copy as a present for a friend who, like me has a great interest in the War Between The States (American Civil War). This mini-opera takes you from the euphoria of succesion in "Join Around The Flag" and "Southern Boys", through the romantic parting of young lovers as the man goes off to war ("Last Dance"), onto the bloody batttlefieds ("Union Mare and Confederate Gray", "No One Would Belive A Summer Could Be so Cold"), to the total desparation of of the result of war ("The Southlands Bleeding" & "Dixie, Now You're Done"). It is a truly emotional experience, and brings to life, through its four main characters, the pictures taken men like Matthew Brady that can be found in any book about the period.
