Blackmore's Night-great pun! April 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Apparantly Richie Blackmore met Frank Sinatra and he said "who are you?". And Blackmore thought "that's it I'm going mediaeval"! Which seemed a logical move-after all didn't Deep Purple dabble in classical music in the 70s? Though heavy metal is hardly my thing Deep Purple were always one of the better in this idiom having recorded country music in the beginning-Joe South's Hush.
Great Album March 31, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great album from Blackmores Night with the theme being Xmas carols but I can honestly say it is excellent with the band sounding superb,Candices singing is brilliant and helps bring the whole xmas feel to the album.Ritchies guitar work is tremendous as you would expect, some might feel good grief what are they thinking off here but let me say the album is done in the Blackmores Night way and they pull it off with ease. I own 6 Blackmores Night cds and this album sits great with my collection give it a listen and judge for yourself and im quite sure you will really enjoy. If you enjoy this album you might want to check out The Xmas Album from Jethro Tull another excellent xmas theme album.
Why? December 25, 2007 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
With so many religious carol recordings around why couldn't they have taken a look through Norman Iles' "Pagan Carols Restored" and put some of his alternatives to song? It would have had a little more point than this sad offering. And a tad more in keeping with Blackmore's Night as a band.
They could have done so much and yet the did so little. Very disappointed.
A white Christmas? Or deep purple? December 9, 2006 20 out of 26 found this review helpful
Neither, actually, but the cover shows a German townscape covered in snow (obviously from the days before global warming) while Ritchie Blackmore, the main musician here (he plays guitar, mandola, nyckelharpa, hurdy gurdy and various percussion), made his name originally with heavy rockers Deep Purple. The music here is very different from Ritchie's earlier music with Deep Purple and (later) Rainbow. I think it is essentially a folk album, rooted in the medieval era while sounding contempory, yet I found it in the mainstream pop-rock section of my local store. I also learned that the album made the top 10 of the American Billboard new age chart. So classify it however you want, but this is Christmas music of the highest quality. Candice Night (a wonderful singer) provides all the lead vocals and some of the harmonies and also plays shawns, pennywhistle and recorder. Producer Pat Regan plays all the keyboards.
The song selection is very British, including as it does I saw three ships, Ding dong merrily on high, Good King Wenceslas and the traditional British folk song Lord of the dance (great to see that one, even if it's not actually a Christmas song as such - it can be interpreted as one), finally closing with We wish you a merry Christmas. More familiar to American ears will be We three kings, Emmanuel and the opening medley of Hark the herald angels sing and O come all ye faithful, joined together by a great instrumental bridge.
Ritchie wrote a couple of tracks - the instrumental Winter (basse dance) and the outstanding Christmas Eve, which was actually released as a single in 2005. The other two songs are covers but they're new to me. Wish you were here (another non-Christmas song that fits in well) is the Rednex song, not the equally brilliant Barbara Mandrell song of that title with which I've long been familiar. I don't know where Ritchie found the traditional Ma-o-tzur but I'm glad he did.
I found this to be a very upbeat album and enjoyed every minute of it. I had no real idea what to expect when I bought it but I sensed that it was likely to be special and it is. I've heard plenty of Christmas albums and this, while not my favorite, is certainly among the best. And as for Blackmore's Night, I'll certainly have to investigate their music further one day.
A great Christmas album...!!! December 1, 2006 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I suppose that this review could be considered by some to be very biased as I'll admit that I have been I lifelong Ritchie Blackmore fan, loving everything he has done from Deep Purple, Rainbow to the beautiful, mature mature music of Blackmore's Night.
If you don't like Christmas records in general, then you will hate this!!!
However the Blackmore's Night sound is absolutely perfect for this CD. The renaissance sound, using traditional instruments and acoustic guitars give it an authentic warm sound and feeling that is perfect for the season.
Cuddle up in front of the fire with a drink, lights dimmed and enjoy both Candice's vocal and Ritchie's effortless guitar playing on traditional carols. Superb pieces include the instrumental 'Winter (Basse Dance)', while Candice's vocals have never been as heavenly as on 'Ma-O-Tzur' and 'Emmanuel'.
Other tracks bring out the fun, happy side of the band which has been apparent in all of their CD's and DVD's so far.
'Christmas Eve' is as good a Christmas record that has been recorded for many years, while 'Wish you were here' which is taken from the bands first album fits perfectly with the mood.
I love the CD sleeve design, but as I am such a fan I would have liked a little more on the inner sleeve notes, but this certainly does not distract from what is a wonderful Christmas Album.
Buy it !!!!! You won't be disappointed..............
