Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great album   October 16, 2008
This is a great album if you like rock mixed with rap. The songs are very political which I believe is a good thing for America, which is who I believe is the target audience.

4 out of 5 stars Very Different But Something Of A Triumph   October 8, 2008

In this fickle world of disposable plastic pop some of which seems like it is designed to last barely the duration of the song itself, it is heartening to discover a band like the Flobots. No overnight sensation they are probably the most unexpected phenomenon of the year.

Put simply the band use a rap-metal formula but there's banjos, horns, sweet female backing vocals, and cellos on it... It shouldn't work, but it does to such an alarming effect it really needs a new genre to describe it. It's success is partly due to the dexerous playing which betrays the fact the band have been playing and recording for 8 years. They even manage to make the genre that most would confine to an early noughties niche come completely back to life.

Aside from that there's the lyrics. Delving back to something from the pre-gangsta era this is one angry, articulate, politically aware record. The likes of Michael Franti, Chuck D, and host of lesser known old school political agitators spring to mind. One thing to say is it never sounds worthy or just aware for the sake of it. These guys clearly believe what they say and are exceptionally well informed.

This is their third album and the first for a major. If anyone needed proof that people should be gently moved into the spotlight then they need go no further than this record. A confident sound from a band who are fully fledged and not just sounding it. Whether you're looking for something a bit more challenging than the last couple of Chilli Peppers albums, want something intellegent, a reminder that intelligent things can be expressed in Hip-Hop, or just proof that the "Handlebars" hit isn't a one-off then you should give this more than a cursory listen.

5 out of 5 stars Album And Band Of The Year   October 2, 2008

I had never heard of the Flobots until the single 'Handlebars' emerged on the radio. Caught by that hook at the beginning of the song and noticing some great instrumentals I thought I'd risk it and check out the album; not thinking that I would end up finding my favourite band of the year and the best album I have heard in a long long time.

What I love most about this album is the time and thought given to each element within the band; the lyrics are inspiring, clever, powerful (Without being politically preachy) and wrapped round a fantastic rhythm section. I particularly noticed the drums and bass in this album, they are amazingly played and provide a brilliant grove throughout the album; this added to funky/rock guitar, with a powerful sounding Violin and wind instruments makes this album a truly musical masterpiece. A perfect fusion of Hip-Hop, Rock and Funk. The song `Combat' displaying this impressive element of the band.

If you are intrigued by this album check out 'Rise', 'Fight with Tools' or 'Stand Up'. But I can't see any fan of music being disappointed with this album or taking something from it.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and Compelling   September 26, 2008

This is not the kind of music I normally go. But due to 'Handlebars' I just had to check out the entire album.

Political, clever and beautiful. With rock styling mixed with Hip Hop, powerful lyrics and a great structure Flobots is essential listening. These guys (and girls) deserve to be huge.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent insurgence for the masses   September 26, 2008

Intelligent, politicised and incredibly potent. Hip hop, jazz, folk and some mental rock stylings fused into some of the most addictive and powerful songs you'll hear. Along with the likes of Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, we now face a new breed of act that respects the listeners intelligence, not takes it for granted.
