INSPIRED collection of disco perfection! October 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For too long disco compilations have focused solely on rehashing the same classics over and over again.
Well, this collection does it differently: it puts the fun back into disco by picking out all the tunes that you have long forgotten about, all those you remember as being vaguely embarrassing, and then sprinkles in a strong selection of the classics for those who have never bought a disco collection before. It'll keep you on the dance floor and put a huge smile on your face.
As the icing on the cake, it unearths the Space Disco genre! Of course, Spacer has long been recognised as a classic disco song, being output from The Chic Organisation, but you can't fail to smile (and more importantly dance) when you hear Automatic Lover or the Star Wars Theme again. Most of us won't have heard these since they were last in the charts 30 years ago
OK, so the collection is based on the UK charts of the 1970s and early 80s, but that actually works out well as it gives you a selection that gives more room to European hits than you would find on standard disco compilations, most of which are US focused.
I've been building up my disco collection over the last few years with regular purchases from Amazon and iTunes, and have come across a few significant gaps which I haven't been able to fill without spending way too much money. This compilation fills in a lot of those gaps - Patsy Gallant, Patrick Hernandez, Leif Garrett, Rafaella Carra.
Finally, the versions on this collection are typically the 7" variety. Now I love buying the 12" versions of favourite songs, but they can go on a bit unless you are a DJ who can get the best out of them with some choice mixing. I'm not a DJ so these work much better as party music.
Sony BMG: Well done, you've made my year!
Not too bad August 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not a bad assortment of disco music... there were one or two that I would have omitted but I was amazed how my tastes had changed. I would have cringed at the disco Star Wars in my youth, but had to play it three times when I played the compellation. Truly shows what a fogey I've become!
A COMPILATION THAT REALLY LIVES UP TO ITS NAME!!! August 21, 2008 Being a disco fan since I was a teenager, it's great to listen to all these great tracks once again. I already own most of them on vinyl but they've been played so many times over the years that they are almost worn out! Whoever compiled this deserves a big THANK YOU for such an amazing compilation! Only downfall is the horrific "Yes sir I can boogie" by that terrible duo Baccara. Still, this track did reach the top of the UK charts in 1977, so there must be lots of people who liked it I guess!
A Disco Delight! July 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is probably the best disco compilation to be released for many years. The 3CD set contains some gems like Leif Garrett, Raffaella Carra and La Belle Epoque (although 'Black is Black' is a 12" mix and not the single). I have bought dozens of disco collections but I will play this one more than the rest I suspect. (On another note, isn't it funny how you wait for ages for a song like 'Do it, do it again' to come out on CD and within days it appears on 2 different compilations as it's also on '70s Dinner Party'. Perhaps the inclusion of the video on a recent Doctor Who episode propelled it back to people's minds?) Anyway, buy this set and you won't be disappointed!
DISCO HEAVEN!!!! July 23, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
WOAH!!!! This has got to be the GREATEST Disco compilation!!! Great to have SO many great tunes on ONE collection - this is no bog-standard disco compilation. Whoever compiled this has really done their research. For me it's just TWO tracks short of being PHENOM ("Romeo & Juliet" by Love & Kisses and "Doctor Love" by Tina Charles)
Anyone with a party coming up.......buy this and all your music worries will be sorted!!!
