get this one rather than the single disc version November 15, 2008 This deluxe edition of Michael Jackson the king of pop has a lot more to it in terms of more songs that would have been found on the number ones best of like Dirty Diana whilst disc 3 has a number of classic rarities that have never been released before like can't get outta the rain a single b-side edit that has never been released before and boosted by the thriller megamix which may not be to eveybody elses tastes but atleast this has a lot more to it than the single disc version which i felt was lightweight in comparison to the deluxe box set edition of Michael Jackson the king of pop.
One of his best compilations October 1, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Unlike the 'seen it all before' 1CD version of this collection, this one actually a wider spectrum of his music - which can only be a good thing!
It's inevitable that the publics choice of songs on CD1 will end up containing all the usual MJ songs (Billie Jean, Thriller, Don't Stop, Rock With You etc...) so it's a huge relief to also have a second CD with some of his less remembered but in some cases much better hits.
Despite what I said about CD1, it still is great (it is Michael after all). It contains most of the biggest hits along with a couple of other tracks which tend not to be heard as much such as Scream, Remember the Time and They Don't Care About Us (I didn't realise this song was so popular with the british public).
I much perfer CD2 though. It contains most of his more 'forgotten' hits such as Say Say Say (which i didn't actually own until now :D), I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Ghosts, History, Dirty Diana, Blood on the Dancefloor, Will You Be There, Who Is It and Give in to Me. Each track is a gem. The only odd choice of song is Speechless which was never released as a single anywhere. It's a great track though so it's more then welcome.
CD3 is a nice extra. Can't Get Outta the Rain has finally been released on CD, plus some unreleased versions of Is It Scary (a personal fave) and Smile are really nice to own.
There are only 3 things that i have to winge about.. 1 - The lack of JAM???? 2 - The lack of IN THE CLOSET??? Two of my favourite MJ songs ever :( 3 - The lack of Got the Hots which has been released on loads of other KOP collections around the world - why not us?
The packaging is quite nice to. It's a stiff card box which contains 3 x CDs in seperate card sleeves each with a picture of the man himself on the front along with a booklet (which, despite saying 'DELUXE UK EDITION' on the front is actually the same as the standard CD booket.) it starts off saying 'These 18 tracks...' when there's actually 48 tracks!
Other then that it' a great buy, so get it now!
please please please no more compilations michael September 28, 2008 I'm not denying the quality of the music which is 5 stars all the way. However, since his last album of original music 8 years ago there has now been 4 compilations, as well as his 4 main albums being re-released, thriller 25 last year etc. Enough is enough ! We want some new original music.
Mmm.. September 25, 2008 I have pretty much every CD and Vinyl every released and was actually looking forward to this one as I HOPED it has MY favorite tracks on ... But one essential one is missing : Dirty Diana .. I saw this one live in concert and it is one of my favorite tracks .. According to what I read in forums I am not alone .. but its not there .. I will probably give this one a miss (heck I probably buy it anyway).
I just gave it two stars simply to the fact that the last few releases were always "Best Of" - "The Ones", "Thriller 25", "Essentials" and whatnot ..
If you are new to Michael Jackson - get it - if you are not - not .
Finally - the correct version of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" September 18, 2008 Michael Jackson completists will want to pick this up for the CD debut of the single version of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."
"The Essential Michael Jackson" says it includes the single version, but it actually uses a new edit of the LP Version in an attempt to recreate the single. WRONG! The single was a slight remix, and it's making its CD debut on "King of Pop." (It should also be on the upcoming deluxe edition.)
Now if only they'd use the right tapes for "Off the Wall" and "Human Nature," both remixed singles that used new and incorrect LP edits on "Essential."
