This is 50: What did you expect? December 1, 2008 50's third album has received a lot of negative press. From the delays, to the dud singles, to losing the sales race to Kanye's "Graduation". In fact the writing was on the wall on this album long before, when G-Unit releases (Mobb Deep, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck) started flopping. Tony Yayo beating on young kids did not help the G-Unit cause either. One could even argue that the split with Game which resulted in Dr. Dre's semi-retirement; or even Eminem's Kim inspired semi-retirement (Note that both Dre & Eminem are missing from the executive producer credits) all conspired to doom the album before it came out. That is if you consider 600K in your 1st week a failure.
On to the album. 50 Cent really outdoes himself on this one. The album has a perfect balance between commercial and gangsta (a criticism of his last album). The album is far superior to "The Massacre". The running time is perfect (not too long). As usual 50 Cent digs up great beats from little known producers. Including a couple of gems from underground favourite Jake One who acquits himself well on the commercial arena.
The 1st six tracks are vintage 50 Cent, which is good news for long time fans & will surprise those that only know 50 Cent from his videos. The beats are sick and 50 is talking smack like only 50 can. "I Get Money" is already an anthem & "I Still Kill" is a classic. The beat on "Man Down" more than makes up for all the bleeps (the track is censored). Its so sick I'm sure Dr. Dre wishes he had produced it himself.
50 Cent doesn't forget radio and he caters for it with good effect throughout the album. Starting with the monster single "Ayo Technology" & the ultra smooth "Follow My Lead" with Robin Thicke. Later on Nicole Scherzinger & Mary J Blige lend a hand to increase the pop appeal of the likely singles "Fire" & "All Of Me".
The early singles "Straight To The Bank", "Fully Loaded Clip" & "Amusement Park" may not have succeeded at radio but their inclusion does add to the overall quality of the album. The latter is not great but neither was "Candy Shop" for which it is a sequel.
The rest of the album is fairly consistent and overall this is the best album 50 could have released. If it fails its because that East Coast sound is not what's hitting at the moment & lets face it, 50 Cent is not the greatest on the MIC. Criticism of his subject matter is irrelevant, this is 50: What you expect?
Not as bad as the massacre.. August 31, 2008 but then that isn't really saying a lot is it? 50 run out of things to say after 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' so now we have to hear about how he blows his undeserved wealth. Those lamenting the death of hip-hop should dig a little deeper, it's still alive and kicking, just dont expect it from the g-unit camp.
Great album June 7, 2008 This is a great album from 50 cent and what i was looking for after being very dissapointed with 'the massacre'. I'm not going to compare it with graduation as they are both great in the own ways and aren't really comparable. I do not reccommend this album mind you if you do not like 50 cent's general sound. The best tracks are; - My Gun Go Off - Man Down - I Get Money - Ayo Technology - Straight To The Bank - Peep Show - Fire - All Of Me - Hustler's Ambition
look elsewhere May 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is so much talent in the world of hop hop but this aint it. Try LMNO, The Visionaries, The Beat Junkies, En Route, 2Mex, J5, Kev Brown.....do yourself a favour and listen to some other artists before you buy what MTV tell you to buy. Peace
WTF, Great album stop the hating January 3, 2008 i don't know what everybodys talkin bout this is a great album. if u don't lyk it then go buy kanyes album which i have and i prefer 50s. 50 may rap about guns, drugs and bitches but thats his flow and everybody should know that by now. so love it or leave it !
