Amazon.co.uk Review Prince Paul joins forces with Dan the Automator to create Handsome Boy Modeling School, an outlet through which the duo (and a dozen or so of their closest big-name friends) can mix and mingle with rap, turntablism, trip-hop and, of course, tongue-in-cheek humour. And while this idea may sound original, its name came straight from an episode of Chris Elliott's short-lived sitcom Get a Life. Elliott--the goofball writer and cameo guest for David Letterman--springs up a few times on the disc in the form of a few vocal samples, but mostly this show is centred around the guests: Encore provides the disc's best rap on "Waterworld", Grand Puba and Sadat X (from Brand Nubian) perform "Once Again" on top of a sample of Three Dog Night's "Old Fashioned Love Song", and DJ Shadow does his usual magic with the 1200s on "Holy Calamity". Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Mike D, Sean Lennon, Alec Empire and even Father Guido Sarducci are also along for the crowded ride. Does this runway of cameos ever sound thematically cohesive? Hell, no. With this many friends helping out, do we really need to hear Prince Paul on the phone with Biz Markie ("Calling the Biz")? Of course not. But this name-dropping vanity fair is nothing if not ambitious, and chances are there's something here that you'll dig. --Jason Verlinde

INCREDIBLE! March 27, 2002 If you are a hip hop fan like me, you will adore this record. Dan ('my man') the Automator along with Prince Paul exell themselves with this composition including many, many famous and infamous artists - from the MC's themselves, to Dj's such as Shadow putting his input in. I must say, if I could add ore stars to the rating I could - great buy! For mine and your sanity buy this please! (but don't tell too many people!).

Eclectic Curriculum! March 7, 2002 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This lp has everything that is lacking in contemporary hip hop. Hip hop has it's roots in eclecticism:-see Bambaata's early mixing and matching. Flash's contrasting of heavy funk and rock music. Despite this much modern rap is perpetuating the same dull cliches, being a pimp, playa, slanging rocks etc privelleged over creativity. It is no accident that Prince Paul, the man who produced the ground breaking "3 ft high and rising" is behind this project. The only draw-back is the rather weak joke that is used as a premise for the album.
Da phatest album aiiight November 14, 2000 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Dan the automator has done it once again! Automator's distinct sound of using cuts from every type of music and spoken word available make it worth the price of admission alone. But add onto that, Prince Paul's genious, and scads of guests, like DJ Koala, DJ Shadow, Del the Funky Homosapian, Sadat X, and tons I can't remember right now, and you get an album that will never collect dust. What sets this album apart from other hip hop albums is particularly the music, which is often hastily done or overlooked by other programmers, but not by the Automator. I strongly reccomend this album, and if you like this, try Dr Octogon for som freaky fun.
Buy Me! July 25, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This album is absolutely excellent - genuinely interesting music with loads of style and attitude. It's worth it just for track number 7, 'The Truth' which features Roisin from Moloko on vocals and MC'ing by J-Live.
