Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
"No-one Ever Really Dies" according to hip-hop uber-producers The Neptunes (aka Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), who have reincarnated themselves (along with singing high school pal, Shay) as N*E*R*D, a crew of buddhist gang-bangers. And if that sounds like a contradiction too hard to reconcile, then you may just be right. In Search Of kicks off with N*E*R*Ds signature tune, "Lapdance", which purports to contain a socially conscious message but works best as a lascivious blast of brainless bump and grind that the group are hard pushed to better. As their moniker suggests, there's something distinctly awkward about these guys. Although more than competent musically, lyrically much of "In Search Of" sounds as if they're trying too hard to be different. To level his karma after "Lapdance", Shay feels compelled to blurt out "I just want your brain" to a prospective partner (on "Brain"). On "Provider", he attempts to soften his street-hustling activities by insisting to his boo that her welfare is his primary concern. The geek humour of the between-song skits falls completely flat. But when all fails they simply return to the tried and true. The insistent bassline of "Lapdance" reprises on "Truth Or Dare", along with stark dramatic strings and a guest vocal from Kelis. "Stay Together" ups the charm factor with saccharine psychedelia and harmonised backing vocals. "Baby Doll" rides on a punk bassline and mondo exotica chorus. "Tape You" begins as a slick street soul mantra about a guy videotaping his girl going through the motions and descends into two-minutes plus of orchestrated moans and groans. "Rock Star-Poser" is a mash of discordance and distortion. The record closes with the swaying "Bobby James" Shay's effects his best George Clinton barber-shop croon. With In Search Of, The Neptunes have set out on what promises to be an interesting journey. They just haven't decided on their destination.--Chris Campion

5 out of 5 stars The Neptunes sound, at it's highest caliber.   June 4, 2008
This review is for the original electronic release, not the rock version.

I remember when this album came out back in 2001, I wasn't feeling The Neptunes at the time. I was mostly into underground hip-hop so listening to this type of stuff was considered kinda poppish. But as the years passed by, my listening taste has grown and I decided to give The Neptunes a true listen because the music nowadays have no creativity whatsoever. So stuff that I didn't like back then has now become gold. This is the masterpiece I missed out on. Upon hearing the massive hits Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo have created for music superstars Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and others, you become drowned in their own flavor of music production, really spaced out sound effects and hard hitting drums making really addictive beats. So when In Search Of... was released, many weren't ready for this at all.

This album showcases their 100% pure talent at creating really effective music. From the opening cut Lapdance to the ending extravaganza Bobby James, The Neptunes bring you their sound at it's absolute best. Every song is a masterpiece. Standout tracks include : Things Are Getting Better, Provider, Truth or Dare, Stay Together, Baby Doll, Tape You, Am I High, and Bobby James which has the greatest last 2 minutes of music I have ever heard. This whole album is perfect, but these are the standouts. You really have to listen to it numerous times to appreciate it. Trust me, give in to this Neptunes classic. Bravo Pharrell and Chad.

5 out of 5 stars Which version to buy...   January 29, 2008

You may have noticed that two versions of this album pop up when you type N.E.R.D. into the search engine.

The cheapest and most easily available has a green cover with all of them on it, then there's a version with a photo of shay playing a video game.

I was quite surprised to see that both versions linked to the same customer reviews.

The Shay/videogame cover was the first to be released as a limeted edition (although it didn't sell very well and stayed on the shop shelves for some time). In this version the music is all synthesised. When they completed it they weren't happy with it and wanted to try again. natuarally the record company wasn't so thrilled so they came to the compromise of releasing a limited edition.

This is the version i heard first and fell in love with.

A few months later they released the green cover this time featuring a band called Spymob playing all the instruments - lots of electric guitars.

I found it harder to accept this new version as the songs simply couldn't seem as fresh to me.

but on contemplation i think the green version is probably the better album. but at least two of the songs are better on the original (too much added to the re-release - i'm looking at you rock star, or rock star poser as it's orginally called) and other songs are as good but different.

apart from that the main difference is a different track order and the original has a lot of skits on it, which i've never been a fan of but these one's are quite entertaining - the first time at least.

So buy the green version and if you love it (you really have to love it - the shay video game cover's pricey!) get the original, think of it as a directors cut.

4 out of 5 stars Funk and RnB in top form   February 18, 2005

Having bought their second album ("Fly or Die") because of the Jason Nevins remix of "Rock Star", which I had listened to from the SSX 3 video game, I had high hopes.

Fly or Die provided a unique listening experience with the largest variety of tracks from any single group on one album that I had ever heard. Each tune held a unique signature from the producers come song writers.

"In Search Of..." was almost an extension of "Fly Or Die" in that it provided a very similar signature on each track. It was immediately recognisable that it was N*E*R*D on the album. However, I felt "In Search Of..." provided a more well rounded experience than the later "Fly Or Die" album.

At times the lyrics appear typical to RnB, which disappoints me as I'm not a straight pop fan, but N*E*R*D manages to pull themselves free of this label by adding unique tunes and attitudes that you will struggle to find anywhere else. The lyrics are amusing most of the time, and if not amusing they are sometimes somewhat deep. Although they sometimes feel too simple as if they were written just for the rhyme. The instrumentals are polished a lot better than "Fly Or Die" and I think this lends itself to the fact that N*E*R*D did not use their own recordings on the final print of the album.

Overall I would recommend this album to anyone who wants something uniquely funky and don't mind explicit lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars its better than fly or die!   December 23, 2004

this cd its far much better compared to fly or die which I found very dissapointing as every single song on that album was all too the same(honest)while on N.E.R.D's 'in search of.....' all of the tracks have got a different style like rock,RnB,hip hop, punk, new wave etc which makes this album very special. Really though their album fly or die was kind of lame compared to this bitch of an album 'in search of.....'.Buy today or whatever day you want to buy it!

This album is amazing! i only bought it cuz it was 4 in a local store but i never expected it to be THAT good!

THe best tracks i think are Stay Together, Lapdance, Brain & Rock Star.

Stay Together & Run To THe SUn are so beautiful they bring a tear to you eye! Theyre mellow, summery, ballads with that edge that only NERD can bring to a track

Lapdance, Rock Star & Truth or DAre are rocky, edgy tracks with lots of crazy cuts & guitar!

Brain & Baby Doll remind me of 1960s songs, especially Baby Doll which reminds me of THe Beatles

Provider & Bobby James are also strong songs - with a ballady feel

Things are Getting Better, Tape YOu & Am I High are very R&B and not my favs

I already have FLY OR DIE which is also a very strong album & same goes for this

NERD just became one of my fav bands!
Simply enjoyable & amazing
