Great oldie re released plus bonus tracks thrown in too.
Introduced me to Otis Redding and Sam and Dave.
Really nice vinyl type cover to go with it.

Still Fresh February 29, 2008
Like the other Reviewers, I bought this as a 13 shillings and 11 pence vinyl LP. It was the top record to take to parties, and we danced to every track.

Unlike some compilations, these tracks are the very best of the artists. This time BONUS tracks really mean it. The CD has about the same amount again in bonus tracks; again all crackers.

This CD is just great value for money

Now, if Island Records would only re-release the other compilations of "Nice Enough To Eat" and "Bumpers"......

As a Teenager I bought this album for 13s 11p and have been looking for the last few years to buy on c.d I would have paid four times the ammount just to have had this classic soul album in my collection. Any 50 somethings who like soul would have certainly bought this on vinyl in the late 1960s.

LIke the other reviewers, I bought this CD as a vinyl replacement. I still have the vinyl original and I listened to some of its tracks to check it if is mono compatible stereo - it isn't and it does not say stereo on the label or the sleeve.

This was never central to my collection, and I originally purchased it largely on the basis of price, which I think was 15s 6d while most LPs were 32s 6d. But (as other reviewers have written) it contained a selection of original and popular tracks and was always good for parties. The re-issue is not such a bargain, but does contain a large number of 'bonus' tracks that makes it a reasonable buy.

What is really disappointing is how many of the tracks are in mono. You could be forgiven for thinking that is because these tracks never were available in stereo, but I know for certain that is not true of some tracks because I have the stereo mix of some of them on vinyl or from other CD's. What is more, they sound like stereo mixes of the same takes. So in the 'remastering' I would guess that they didn't go back to the original tapes. That said, many of the mono mixes are excellent so that although everything is in one place the drums, bass, vocals etc, are clear and distinct.

To sum up: some great classic soul nostalgia tracks, but loose one star for lack of stereo.

UNIQUE FOR ITS TIME July 6, 2007

I bought this in 1969 and it was the centre of a very small collection of 45s, EPs and LPs. It meant everything that was great in soul music to me and then .................. at a party someone stole it!! (And I know who it was.) I have searched for a replacement for years and at last here it is. Some of the less known songs can seem a bit weak now but they are are still special and are among so many key soul pieces. Buy this and enjoy it and don't let it out of your sight!
