Music is a heartbeat..."Am I still Immune?" December 16, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've recently discovered Low. Well, I recently decided to properly listen to this album, having seen it several times at different friends houses, probably heard it but never paid attention. The clue is that Low's "secret name" creates such an atmosphere that it simply flows through. It's the essence of downtempo music and the "SlowCore" trio are definitely setting the standarts. Now I'm listening to Secret Name for the after hours and so far most of my friends loved it. It's not an uplifting album but if you like emotional music; this is a wonder of an album for anyone who isn't afraid of feeling sad.
Breathtaking April 10, 2002 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Wow. I don't know anything about Low, and bought this album completely blind on the strength of a recommendation. Immaculately crafted, breathtakingly beautiful songs, immediately accessible but revealing more with every playing. Not a single weak track here. This is simply the finest album I have bought in many many months, and I'm now off to pick up as much of the back catalogue as I can find.
Sheer brilliance March 14, 2002 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A quite grilliant album is about all you can say. Beautiful songs slowly unfold with absolutely gorgeous vocals and wonderful harmonies, 'two-step' is one of my favourite ever songs. For slow and beautiful songs, the only thing better than this album is actually seeing Low live.
Good February 7, 2001 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Sparse songs with beautiful vocals in which every note counts and makes you shiver. Needless to say, Low have done themselves proud. If you have any money then buy it, if not then ask someone to buy it for you.
A lovely album August 5, 2000 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Steve Albini's production methods give Low a much drier and less echoed sound than their first two albums, 'I Could Live in Hope', and 'Long Division'. This works well, and the arrangements, although still sparse, are both appropriate and adventurous - 'Don't Understand', the most aggressive song on the album, is built around broken tape loops. As usual, Alan and Mimi's vocals are beautiful, their harmonies weaving in and out of one another and sending shivers down the spine. This has to be the most accessible Low album, and would be a perfect first buy.
