Although this Kentucky combo had a short lifespan, its influence has been extraordinary, presaging the underground "math-rock" revolution and spawning spinoffs such as Tortoise and Gastr Del Sol. But don't go thinking that the foursome is a mere footnote: The bracingly dense, dizzyingly complex songs that vein this, their second full-length release, perfectly capture the smarter face of early-'90s thug-rock. Yes, Slint's sound is descended from punk, but its members--particularly guitarist Brian McMahan--never subscribed to the "keep it simple, stupid" philosophy. Spiderland is so rife with breakneck tempo changes, off-kilter chord progressions, and bizarro-world themes, you'd be hard-pressed to go a listen without discovering something new. --David Sprague

5 out of 5 stars Essential album   October 11, 2008
One of the few things Pitchfork gets right, Spiderland is both one of the most "important" rock albums (whatever that means) as well as one of the best. It lives in its own universe, and sounds like nothing else even though so many people were influenced by it.

I won't try to take it apart track-by-track, as this is a concept album (the good kind). All you need to know is that it is crushingly intense and hypnotic.

Oh, and you _really_ have to play it loud, or it won't have the same impact.

5 out of 5 stars So good I own this on 3 formats...   September 15, 2008
Hell, this record is so good, I got it on cd, lp and a back up copy on minidisc just in case... if my house were on fire I would save the vinyle before my housemates - and I like them.

Just listened to the vinyl again today and it rips the hell out of so much other stuff, this makes my all-time top 10...

Going after one of the holy cows of influential 'post-rock' here but just being honest, this is a good album, worthy of a place on the shelf of anyone who likes guitar music but I don't think it is as amazing as some would have you believe. Its got some fantastic moments, like a jammed out version of early fugazi or girls against boys -(if you've actually heard squirrelbait you'll know what I mean)also the for carnation is worth checking out if you're a fan of Brian Mcmahon too. Really good stuff I just think there are better albums in this genre of music.

5 out of 5 stars Short but very Sweet   April 7, 2008

Slint are an alternative rock band from Kentucky, USA. They formed in 1986 and released their first album "Tweez" in 1987. Their second and most acclaimed album "Spiderland" (1991) is a dark and brooding affair. Vocals vary from spoken word to full on shouting and the music is characterised by haphazard time signatures and unusual chord changes. The overall sound is similar to Sonic Youth and Black Flag and is dominated by a pounding bass line underpinning screeching guitars. The lyrics are then often spoken and whispered over the top creating an eerie atmosphere although track 5 "For Dinner.." is an instrumental. The highlight is the final track "Good Morning Captain" and it is alleged that vocalist McMahan made himself throw up during the recording such was the intensity of his screaming in the final chorus. With only 6 tracks "Spiderland" is a real grower. It will appeal to fans of Pavement, Mogwai and even Nirvana. If you want something different and are not afraid to take a chance then give Spiderland a listen.

4 out of 5 stars fine stuff from dark hearts   September 9, 2007

slint, were, are, well i believe that they reformed for a few shows this year, but may not reform full time, are a band that the critics say invented the genre of post rock, this indeed could be true, for this was released in 1991 and as i think back, nothing really sounded like this prior to that so kudos to the band for that then.
The sound of this album however isnt all post rock, there are certainly grungey moments as well but the albums feet step aside from the usuallight, heavy, light heavy plunge of grunge to be fair to them, but an element exists nonetheless.
Brian mcmahan has a strange haunting vocal style, whispers his way through parts of this album and tells a story,a bleak, dark, tortured story as well, this is a journey of an album, sidestepping normal ideas, this isnt for all for sure.
Six tracks in total,5 of which feature lyrics, this is deep stuff, tracks like washer and good morning, captain are hard to ignore and indeed mcmahon lets out tortured howl at end of the final track that made himself sick,in fact as many testify some members of the band had to seek refuge in mental asylums after this release, startling fact that readers, this isnt the worlds finest album but hard to ignore all the same, essential?,maybe not but deserving of more credit perhaps.
