5 out of 5 stars A wonderful mixed bag of songs   June 10, 2001

I get the feeling that these songs were compiled from a few years of recordings. As such it doesn't have the cohesive style you find on Eva by Heart or Songbird, yet the pleasure of her vocal performances is present throughout. The real action occurs in the middle of the CD when you have simple yet touching country girl vocal on Penny To My Name, followed by the exquisite folk phrasing on I Wondered by a Brookside, and onward through to Anniversary Song where her heart-rending vocal performance leaves me lost for words. Every bit as vital as Songbird and totally remarkable that the CD is a compilation of studio archive recordings.

I first heard Eva Cassidy singing Over The Rainbow (not on this album) on Top Of The Pops 2 in late 2000. Later I heard another track (Wonderful World) played on Radio 2. I was hooked. When I read the review synopsis on Amazon which basically states that she could not get a record deal because all the record company execs wanted to pidgion-hole her talent into a single category I was dumbfounded. Surely with talent like this you would create a new category if you must. Come on all you record companies, how many other great talents are we to possibly miss because you don't know upon which rack in the record shop to put an artist. It is such a tragic waste that there is such a small quantity of Eva's sound left for us to hear. I once heard it said that "If you ain't got the blues, then you ain't got a soul". Well Eva could do Blues, but she could equally do Country (Penny to my name), Gospel (Way beyond the blue), and the most sensual version of Time after Time that I think I have heard. The BBC Radio 2 website is currently running a poll of voices of the Century to be played over Easter. Eva got my vote at number one. I also currently have the Live at Blues Alley album which shows the breadth of one of the greatest vocal talents of all time (In my humble opinion) and is a must have addition to any record collection. Finally I would ask that if any more recordings exist that they be assembled into more albums and released into the world. It's such a tragic shame we cannot record more from beyond the grave.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant   February 9, 2001
this is an album of great songs sung by i believe the greatest singer the world has ever heard. no other singer in my memory has moved so many people so deeply as eva has. Time After Time is a very, very fine album indeed.

4 out of 5 stars right singer, wrong cd   January 11, 2001

I am very, very sorry to say, or more accurately, type, this but I found Time After Time something of a disappointment. This is of course in the context of what I expect from an Eva Cassidy CD. I first heard Eva when I discovered "Songbird" at my brother's house. I knew of her, but had never heard her voice. What a treat was in store. I was enthralled and utterly bowled over by four things. Firstly her voice. She reached deep inside and touched me like I had never known before, not on my wedding day, not at the birth of my children, never had I felt like this. There was a part of me, I didn't even know existed and Eva brought it alive in the most vivid way. Secondly, there was the tremendous way in which she would gently whisper to you, sending you off into a perfect dreamland a million miles away, then, when you knew that it could not get any better...........10,000killowatts of Eva right inside, threatening to blow your head off. Fantastic. Thirdly was the way she restructured Somewhere Over The Rainbow in a way that the writer could not even have dreamed of, it just sounded so right. Purses have never been silkier. Finally, she had an amazing ability to get inside each song and feel each word absolutely. It seems to me that these elements are just not as strong in "Time After Time". It gets off on the wrong foot with the strangely fuzzy "Kathy's Song" which lacks the clarity I expect from Eva, and moves onto "Ain't No Sunshine", a good enough track but I don't feel that she really gives it the Cassidy treatment. Next up is a live rendition of "The Letter" which I quite like because of the feeling of closeness to the action, and the drummer really seems to enjoy himself! Good man. "At last" is a track which I had previously heard sung only by a chap called Nat King Cole, I'm sorry Nat fans, but Eva does blow him away, it's short but sweet. The title track leaves me strangely cold, it just doesn't seem to suit her. Which takes me on to "Penny To My Name", she seems to get on well with this song and it's a nice track in a "my dogs dying and my house is burning down" kind of way. "I Wandered By A Brookside" drags a little, but the non singing singing bit is pleasant. "I wish I Was A Single Girl Again" is a shortie, again, but she lifts the volume a bit and is accompanied only by herself on the guitar, it's a good one. "Easy Street Dream" also gets the vocal volume treatment and I like it. It is, however, followed by "Anniversary Song", a beautiful, beautiful tune but I cannot listen to it without getting such goose bumps that my skin aches, poignant does not come close to describing it. And so we reach "Woodstock", not literally you understand, music can take your mind to wonderful places, but physical teleportation is still impossible, I believe. What can I say about Woodstock, yes it's her voice, so it's good and she does sing it in her own, superb, way, but making a silk purse from a top quality piece of silk is not quite the trick she got up to with "Rainbow", but it is good anyway. So, finally it's "Way Beyond The Blue." What is that about? Its beauty is, I'm afraid, lost on me. In summary then, if you love Eva Cassidy's music as I do then you will know that you cannot live without it, indeed, you probably own it already. If you are some unfortunate sole who does not "get" Eva Cassidy, and you simply view her as a blindingly brilliant singer then I think that your needs would be better served with "Songbird" or "Eva By Heart". If you don't even think of her as a blindingly brilliant singer, pop down to the hospital and have them check your pulse.

I had this CD bought for me! I was astounded! Her versionof Kathys Song and Time after Time are phenomenal! From listening to this one album you get the impression that you could give Eva Cassidy anything and she would sing it perfectly!! But the most impressive thing about this album is the way she reworks classic songs and makes them her own!Not to mention her own material which can only be described as out of this world!
