Groundbreaking album of the late 1980's February 20, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I listened to this album at a time when most of the music I listened to was of the Bollywood type. After Like A virgin and Who's that girl, Madonna really managed to make a name for herself. I will never "La Isla Bonita" the day when I was leaving sunny Mauritius for snowy London. Also True Blue and Open Your Heart were good dance tunes, the latter of which was the first remix I heard back in 1986. Prior to U2 and Enya, it was Madonna who filled the walkman's tunes; Memorable !
My Second Favourite Madge album... December 2, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Yes, before Madonna wrote books for children and stole orphans with families(!?), she was indeed a singer. This album is just excellent, it has serious moments ("Live To Tell"), amazingly perfect pop moments ("Open Your Heart") and just damn right fun moments too ("Where's The Party"). The album has a minor flaw, which is the Jimmy Cagney inspired "White Heat" which samples from the film of the same name...which is slightly odd, but I still find myself enjoying it throughly. Overall, 8/10. Madonna's best 80's album by a long way...yes although I love Like A Prayer too, it just isn't as consistant as this album...plus "Spanish Eyes" is a second rate version of the excellent "La Isla Bonita" anyway... If your new to Madonna, I'd reccomend three albums. This one, Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor. If your not a fan of studio albums, check out the Immaculate Collection. Otherwise, this is the album for you.
The first pinacle move October 2, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The fact that Madonna rarely refers to this album leads me to believe it's not one of her favourites. If you see an interview with her, she refers plenty to Holiday and Like A Virgin then completely skips to Like A Prayer.
Since The Blond Ambition Tour she's hardly included the songs from the album on any of her tours (La Isla Bonita featured as the only song from this era in the Girlie Show and The Drowned World Tour (if you don't include the tiny Open Your Heart sample, the Re-Invention Tour - even tho considered a "greatest hits" tour - only featured a heavily edited Papa Don't Preach. Her latest Confessions Tour included to most references to the True Blue/Who's That Girl era since Blond Ambition - Live To Tell, the Where's The Party sample and - yet again - La Isla Bonita). All very pitiful considering the album sold by the millions and millions all around the world.
Any artist will tell you their third album is the most difficult. You need a new direction, you need to show you have staying power and on top of it all, you need to offer something new and fresh and still keep peoples interest! Madonna achieved all of these with the release of True Blue. A big Madonna fan will offer their left arm to see her perform Open Your Heart on her next tour (which she's apparently planning for 2008 to celebrate her 50th birthday AND 25 years at the top), as would I. The True Blue album is an important one for her. She grew up and tackled important coming of age subjects (Papa Don't Preach) whilst showing she still had good times ahead (Where's The Party) and showed she can still be sexy on top of it all (Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita).
The True Blue album also premiered what would become a staple in her career - her very first re-invention. Just one year earlier she was dressed in 3 different lace see-thru tops at one time, ripped skirts and jeans and rags tied up in her hair writhing around in a wedding dress on her Virgin Tour. This Madonna was completely different and nobody can re-invent themselves in such a successful way AND still produce great music.
To sum it up the True Blue album is a fun, yet grown up look on what Madonna wanted to do with her music. It paved the way for Like A Prayer, Vogue and Erotica. Without True Blue she couldn't have done all the other things she did afterwards and luckily for us, the music on this album lived up to it.
Madonna's most important album February 19, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is surely madonna's most important album because it cemented her place as a real superstar. Her first two albums were incredibly successful but she would not be the icon she is today if True Blue hadn't been the critical and commercial success it turned out to be. In fact Madonna managed the near impossible feat of achieving significant musical growth while not alienating her orginal audience. It is also the first album where she takes production credit so, all in all, it represents a significant watershed in her career.Side one of the LP version (Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, White Heat and Live To Tell) is arguably the best album side Madonna has ever recorded. Unfortuntely, what lets the album down is that side two is perhaps one of the worst. Jimmy, Jimmy, Where's The Party and Love Makes The World Go Round are standard filler material and nowhere near the level of the other six tracks, which is a shame. Having said that, the album does stand up as a whole. In my opinion, Live To Tell is the best track. It's a really interesting, haunting ballad and is pretty unique - I honestly can't think of any songs that sound anything like it.
A great album with great success! December 11, 2004 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was Madonna's 3rd album from her Sire label. 'True Blue' was a highly successful album as it was a number 1 in the charts everywhere (!) apart from 2 places. These 2 places were Holland and the US where 'True Blue' charted at number 2. Many highly successful singles were also set out for this album as many got to number 1 in the US and the UK. This album was originally released in 1986. It was then again released in the 00's but had 2 bonus tracks on it. They called this a 'Remastered edition' and you could also get these for the Madonna albums 'Madonna' or 'My First Album' (UK and US titles) and 'Like A Virgin.' The 2 new tracks on this album are 'True Blue (The Color Mix)' and 'La Isla Bonita (Extended Remix).' I do not have the remastered edition so I can't comment on True Blue's remix. However, I have the La Isla Bonita 'SuperMix' which has the Extended Remix on it aswell as 'Open Your Heart (Extended Remix)', hits 'Crazy For You' and 'Gambler' plus an Instrumnetal version. All I can say is the 'La Isla Bonita' (Extended Remix) is definately a keeper!
