why did he bother? January 6, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
this is an album covering many of the styles of music young has covered in his career, so it could be a 'greatest collection of my musical styles', except it isn't
the magic has gone, the candle barely burns, with just a flicker of light on most of the songs
play the old stuff, the old stuff is better - there is nothing here to get your heart beating stronger, faster
not a patch on 'living with war'; if you want his magic, listen to 'massey hall 1971'

I'm a MASSIVE neil young fan and I have to say I find this album quite average!...with its wild mixture of Neil both acoustic and full on rocking, I'm afraid it just doesn't grab me as much as..say..Living with War.
I was looking forward to this release mainly because everyone harked on about the track Ordinary People...have to say it doesn't deserve the hype, its a 20 minute track that should have been just 5! (cor I'm really going to anger the hardcore fans with that!!)
If you you want REALLY good advice then invest in the archives which are being slowly drip released, the "Massey Hall" concert being one of the best live performances I've ever heard from anyone!
Up to the standard of his early classics. January 1, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
> I went off Neil a bit when he backed the wrong side in the middle east war, though I shouldn't knock a man for being patriotic. Although, as a mate of mine points out he can sound a bit samey, it's a sameyness I like. In fact this is the best album of his I've heard in a long while. I think his Ordinary People knocks Dylan's Workingman's Blues (off of Modern Times) into a cocked-hat. Brilliant track. Although it's a bit Hollywood/Grapes of Wrath, never-the-less the best proletariat song I've heard in a long time.
Hat Trick. December 29, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Following on from Dylans Modern Times and Sprimgsteens Magic, Young has also delivered his best album of new material in over a decade. For me it`s the best of the 3.Great songs vocal performance and playing along with the all important production. If you are even considering buying this hesitate no longer and click on purchase. Album of the year.
Not the best thing Mr Young has ever done but... November 6, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Bloody brilliant all the same! If it helps to show where I stand on Neil Young albums, my favourite was, is and forever will be Zuma closely followed by the "Rust" albums so those are what I am measuring this work against. Chrome dreams II has a fascinating mix of styles which it would appear has upset some of the purists, but if you come at this as a lover of rock music and not necessarily a Neil Young obsessive then you will find much to enjoy here. Superb playing by all concerned, Young's singing is above par (for him!), and even the 18 minutes of "ordinary people" flies by with nary an indulgent, unnecessary moment (honest). I've heard some good stuff this year and this is well inside the top 10.
