5 out of 5 stars Enchanting and Enriching.   April 28, 2008

This music was such a wonderful surprise when I first listened, timeless and not at all reflective of its creator's youth; it continues to be a revelation. The underlying folk influence fuels more straightforward and somewhat subdued yet uplifting rock arrangements that caress a voice so endearing it almost brings tears to the eyes. She has a fragile, frail element in her delivery combined with the hint of a Scottish accent. The songs linger yet create a need to return to them again and again. They are full of melody with wonderful sing along choruses, interesting vocal inflections and lyrics of depth. Of many new releases over the years that grace my Ipod few remain in their entirety, but this lp is glorious from start to finish. I hope this is the beginning of a long and bright future for Amy but this album alone secures its place as an accomplished thing of beauty that will be listened to and enjoyed for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure at first...   April 19, 2008
...it sounded a bit like a Scottish Kirsty Macall who couldn't sing, but the second time I thought hey, it isn't bad after all, and the third time I just love it! Every track is refreshingly different and full of surprises and great to sing along to in the car. One of the best albums I've heard in years, can't wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Full of feel good factor   April 3, 2008
A bloke down the pub told me to buy this album. I'm so pleased that I did. She could be the new Dido - the female soloist that EVERYONE likes, and yet she's so young. There is not a weak track and I enjoyed it from the first listen and when other people have heard me play it they ask what it is. Perhaps that's the best recommendation I can give!

This is the most refreshing new album I have bought in years. Great tunes and lyrics, and beautifully sung. It all sounds so unpretentious and effortless. Amy doesn't have to rely on any retro style or production either.

Really really great. If only all new music was a honest and as fresh as this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest debuts.   March 23, 2008

Firstly, a quick message for S. A. Macdonald - we're reviewing a studio product here not a live performance.

This is a fabulous album, full of well crafted pop songs, strong melodies and catchy hooks. I reckon that most of the tracks here could be released as singles and would do as well as each other. It's a travesty that Amy didn't even get nominated for a Brit as in my opinion, this knocks spots off anything that Nash did on Made of Bricks; each to their own I guess, but it stunk of the Brit Academy looking after their own!

'Mr Rock and Roll' and the title track are obvious mentions and it feels wrong to pick tracks out seeing as the album is of a consistent high quality throughout, but the catchy 'Let's Start a Band' and 'Footballer's Wife' are as good as any track released by a solo female artist in recent years.
