5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   November 26, 2007

I was unsure at first, but In Rainbows has truly grown on me and I understand now why some are calling it a musical landmark. It's full of unique and evocative songs, and I can see how its been influenced by Thom Yorke's solo album "The Eraser". Everytime I listen, I notice something new... they continue to be ahead of their time.

Best song has to be Nude!

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply one of their very best   November 25, 2007

For sometime now, I have been convinced that Radiohead fans are broadly divided into two groups. Those that embrace the post-OK Computer Radiohead, and those that yearn for another Bends. For me, I am definitely a post-OK fan. OK Computer and Kid A are, in my opinion, their two masterpieces. Given that background, I was excited about the prospect of another exciting Radiohead release that further confirmed that they were streets ahead of anything else out there. I was not disappointed.

In Rainbows seems to have taken all the best elements from the previous three albums (Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief) and honed them to such a degree that this ranks up there as one of their very best albums. I would argue that if you like their most recent work, you will certainly like this one. I would even suggest that it has enough Bends-esque moments to impress fans of that album too. In my opinion, this is right up there with OK Computer as their finest work to date.

The album opens with 15 Steps, which (as an earlier reviewer points out) would not have been out of place on The Eraser with its atmospheric use of electronics. It then moves onto Bodysnatchers, which is perhaps my favourite moment on the album. More guitar based (in a traditional sense) than many of their recent efforts, it has a sense of urgency to it that draws you in and makes you wish it would never end. This song is also perhaps the most obviously political on the album (by and large the album isn't quite as political as Hail to the Thief).

Nude has been talked about many times and it is, without doubt, a beautiful track. Thom's voice is really on top form (isn't it always though?) and the long wait for its perfection has been more than worth it. Weird Fishes/Arepeggi is a particularly moving song which never fails to get me on every listen. As does, for that matter, All I Need which is another one that has me reaching for the repeat button. Having said that, it also never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Another powerful song and another powerful example of the talent of Thom Yorke.

Faust Arp is another slow number followed by Reckoner which manages to conjure up the image in my head of Thom dancing away up on stage in his own indomitable way. House of Cards has an eerie quality to it and floats around inside your head for sometime after you have switched your player off. Jigsaw Falling into Place is another favourite of mine on the album, once again raising the urgency level before the slow-paced Video.

Video is quite frankly a stunning end to the album. A slow, atmospheric song, it once again highlights what an amazing voice Thom actually has. It also goes to show that even when Radiohead strip things down, they are far ahead of any their peers. Quite frankly, with songs of this standard, it makes it difficult to put on an album by anyone else after In Rainbows has finished. Everything else just sounds so incredibly inferior.

By the time you have digested all ten tracks on this album, I have no doubt that you will come to the same conclusion as me. This is their finest work since OK Computer and may even be their finest work full stop. An album, and a band, that should embarrass the purveyors of the dross that afflicts our ears on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Back to their best...   November 23, 2007

Absolutely brilliant album, you'll love it even if you aren't a big fan.

As previous reviews have mentioned, no fillers of any kind... 10 classic songs that will leave you wanting more. Stand-outs are 15 Step, House of Cards and Jigsaw Falling Into Place - the first single.

Genius idea to release it via download and then on CD - I went for the former option but will definately buy the latter to add to my collection.

Is there a better release from 2007 - I very much doubt it!

I can't describe how amazing this album is.I would go as far as to say it is better than OK Computer. These are songs of immense beauty.Lyrics of a collapsing relationship, and even better,a return to "normal" rock. The opener 15 Step tries to confuse that with a difficult time-signuture.A children's choir in the chorus and a sense of unrest, while Thom's lyrics capture angst, which is a recurring theme.Bodysnatchers is a monster of a song,it is almost Creep mark two.The guitars in this are simply breathtaking.Nude,is SPELLBOUNDING.Any Radiohead fan worth their salt will have been waiting for it to be released for years. It is a peerless soul ballad.Superb strings and sparse guitar, this is haunting. The lyrics a play on sexual politics are amazing.Weird Fishes and All I Need are great aswell. All I Need is a almost Bowie cover, drenched with operatic strings.Aust Arp is a tidy little song.Reckoner is great classic Radiohead song.Sung entirely in falsetto,it is a great Thom Yorke vocal.House Of Cards is a average song.It doesn't have the same tense feel as the rest of the record.Jigsaw Falling Into Place is another super piece of Yorke genius. However, then comes Videotape.Words don't do this justice.I broke into tears on hearing it first.Think Exit Music(For A Film) mixed with Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Overall, this is the greatest album of the decade.
