unique songs May 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Apart from the other songs that form this album, the 2 wonderful songs - clowns and Cologne Cerrone Houdini - are the ones imbued with unique melodies . As a lover of Electro-pop, I was a bit surprised at first by the completely new sound of Goldfrapp.
But listening to the album a few times, it is hard to miss the comforting and floating melody of Clowns encrowned with the voice of Alison Goldfrapp. It is a combination of melancholy and peace, ingenious.
Not sure! May 18, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not at all sure on this album, it`s disappointing and very different to their last one which I loved. The two singles are good but the rest of the album sounds a bit bland. I was looking forward to another Supernature but it didn`t quite happen. I gave it 2 stars mainly for the A&E and Happiness tracks.
Love, Love, Love, this album May 15, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Am currently playing this to death! Love, love, love it, maybe even as much as Supernature. Our favourite song is Clowns and my husband keeps playing it over and over again!! It's a great album to chill out in the sunshine to. It lifts the spirit and makes you feel all floaty like :-)
After a few listens, you'll feel the magic May 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have to be honest and say that after 1 or 2 listens, Happiness aside I wasnae too 'happy'. After the superb triumvirate before Seventh Tree, I wondered which direction Goldfrapp would take us in. So, I persevered as they are one of my favourite bands and I'm glad to say I finally get it. Some won't get beyond 1 or 2 listens and others won't feel this is as strong as Supernature, Black Cherry or Felt Mountain. And perhaps there is no signature track from this album, which really stands out although I personally love 'Happiness' but as a cohesive collection of tracks, it is an absolutely magical album. It's such a relaxing, eclectic selection of music and throughout Alison Goldfrapp's voice absolutely enchants. It's not as musically 'convoluted' as some of their earlier works but I still feel this is as strong as some of their earlier works and for me it supercedes 'Supernature', although they are very different albums. It's an excellent 4th offering and I cannot wait for the 5th but I'll enjoy the magic in the meantime.

First heard this band on Jools and immediately liked the songs/harmonies and thought that they were a breath of fresh air in their thinking, and obviously had put a great deal of work into the textures and layering of the sound/vocals. Then I bought the album. One question, was this album recorded huddled together in a metal box? I've been doing music for about 35yrs, and I will freely admit that I am still learning and will still end up knowing relatively little, but a great deal of stuff, especially from today's musicians, doesn't do them any favours with their choice of producers. It takes a bit more than a diploma and a bunch of gadgets to give a band their unique character, but there again, a great deal of money and effort does go into trying to turn sows ears into silk purses and we end up with the equivalent of a pig with lipstick! Seriously, get a producer who feels the music that you're trying to make and isn't trying to turn you into yet another replica.
