Good stuff April 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Five seconds into "Living well" and I'm happy. It's a solid sound that harks back to early albums and it's R.E.M. doing what they do. But what do I know? I loved "New Adventures in Hi Fi".

My review is not only in the title above - This is simply the best REM album since Out of Time. Enjoy.
Felt compelled to write a review - superb! April 11, 2008 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I felt compelled to urge people to listen to this album .. it is fantastic. It's so good that it's worth noting this is the first time I've written a review!
As a long time REM fan, I initially purchased this album out of loyalty rather than absolute glee at the prospect of a new release; I mean what else could they do that we've not heard before?
Having listened to it ... WOW! I have to concur with Matthew Foster's review; see the most useful reviews (no point me reinventing the wheel).
It's a melodic rock album bursting with energy ... it has the capacity to make you feel young again; depending on how old you actually are of course.
Give it some quality time and hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as Matthew Foster and myself.
Please don't believe the hype April 11, 2008 8 out of 17 found this review helpful
I've listened to REM for years and I love many of their albums, particularly Green and the five IRS albums that went before it. They have progressed patchily since then, so I have latterly proceeded with caution, and read the initial magazine reviews carefully before deciding to shell out my hard earned on this one. Stand up Q magazine for yet another hyperbolically misleading review, suggesting a return to the form of my favourite albums, and indicating that REM had once again found their mojo and returned to greatness.
Oh no they haven't. Nothing on here stands comparison with tracks such as Cuyahoga, and all the other fine material they laid down in their prime. There are three good tracks on here, the rest is loud, dull and devoid of ideas. Peter Buck appears to forgotten how to play an arpeggio or one note at a time, and instead thrashes away through track after track with barely a musical idea worth crediting save the desire to bang out chords to a lumpen rhythm ad infinitum. Its a short album - this is frankly merciful on the ears, but since there are only three tracks here I would even consider ripping to mp3, thats 3 per track on the basis of my 9 purchase.
And the production, oh dear. Stripped down it isn't, clear it isn't. Loud, lacking any light or shade, over-compressed and flat, it makes a series of loud, unremittingly in your face songs sound even more so. I love this band's music, and I wanted to listen to the new album, but until I got to track 5, it was all I could do not to switch back to the radio in my car. There may be a good album in here waiting to get out, but until it is remixed, resequenced, and frankly re-arranged and recorded, it will remain utterly trapped.
If you have money to spend on REM, go and buy the early albums if you don't have them, or even buy the popular but not so good mid period albums that everyone has already (Automatic, for example), but before buying this, I suggest you listen to someone else's first, and then download the three tracks worth listening from the Internet for your mp3 player. The rest is very poor indeed.
REM have found the perfect balance! April 10, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
REM's latest album Accelerate is a brilliant surprise for REM and indeed all rock fans for that matter. I've always enjoyed their music although I'd been somewhat disappointed with all their releases since Up in 1998. After that they seemed to take a different direction for whatever reason and most of their tracks became a bit of a mis-match with a lack of punch, with the exception of the odd single. I'm not saying this was all a bad thing, some of their work was good and they proved that they had more to offer than just catchy pop/rock songs, however it needed more of a balance. Accelerate is a great album which appears to be a clever mix of Automatic for the people, New Adventures and Around the Sun, except with a more mature feel. REM and Michael Stipe are very talented and they have shown that they still have it. The strongest tracks on the new album are Living Well, Man-Sized Wreath, Accelerate, Hollow Man and Supernatural Superserious. Any of these could be future singles with great catchy choruses. Houston and Until the Day is Done are softer tracks and sound like they could have come straight from Automatic for the People. Then there is Mr Richards which rocks along utilising a mix of sounds. Sing for the Submarine could be an understated track but it has some brilliant guitar sounds. Horse to Water and I'm Gonna DJ are the slightly weaker tracks but are still easy listening. Overall Accelerate has a great mix of heavy punchy rock, pop classics and acoustic-style ballads. A very pleasing album and one which will surely bring REM fans back.
