 A classic....just give it time. August 7, 2008
Just had a read of some of the other reviews for this album. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, could I please ask that you doubters out there give this wonderful piece of music a chance.
Portishead have tried something a little different from their last studio albums and I think that they have come up with something magical.
If you havent got into it straight away, it may be one of those albums you forget about for 6 months or so, and then find it hiding under a copy of "master of puppets". If this is you, I urge you to listen again with clear ears to "we carry on", "machine gun" and "threads". You might just find that it was worth the wait.

Not what I expected but I still love it. There are bits that sound like the early Velvet Underground with their relentless riffs and some of the electronics are reminiscent of Can, but there's still enough variety to keep it interesting throughout.
Very dark though which may not appeal to everyone.

Sorry, but is this the same band that produced "Dummy"? I could almost forgive them the woeful second album, but "Third" hits new lows. Msrs Utley, Gibbons and Barrow - can I have my money back, please?

Very simply this is one of the worst records I've ever had the displeasure of buying. It's pure unadulterated indulgent crap and I loved their first two albums. I've never felt moved enough to review anything until I came across this nonsense. Whatever you do try and hear some of it before you buy.

One of the most boring albums I've heard recently, as a fan of 'Dummy' this bears little resemblance to what was an amazing sound with amazing vocals. Here the music sounds old and tired, the vocals are nowhere near as impressive and it greatly disappointed me that only one track (magic doors) comes anywhere near to the brilliance of 'Dummy'.
Every other track on this album is monotonous and a waste of time - but hey perhaps you'll like it! For me I can think of many other groups who still push the boundaries and make interesting tunes while Portishead wallow in this dreary depressing rubbish that doesn't even compare to their debut from ten years ago(?)
