Very disappointing June 10, 2008 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
It's been well documented that this was Madonna's last album for Warner before her new flashy live-download-multimedia record deal and that the Confessions album didn't set the US market alight like it did elsewhere.
So businesswoman Madonna (and all her advisors) decide to produce a quick release using all the top R'n'B producers with an album worth of tracks and enough material to do a whistle stop tour before the end of the year.
Good business sense and it makes perfect sense from Madge's point of view.
Musically? The album is poor in my opinion. And I've loved and stood by almost all the albums she's produced in the last 20 years. Except for Bedtime Stories, which was saved by the Bjork track and a few other side balls.
I didn't find Hard Candy had many catchy tunes (except for Miles Away and maybe Heartbeat). And she seems to have produced some incredibly horrendous bridges (see Give it to me, Heartbeat and a few other songs). I'm quite surprised to now say in hindsight that 4 minutes probably is actually a good song compared to some of the other stuff on here.
First album by her which doesn't appear to be hers and there is little personality behind it. A shame.
Hopefully, she'll make something better next year...
Easy on the Candy... June 5, 2008 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
Originally, before the album came out I had heard only a few songs from it. I still got a good idea of 'Hard Candy' and decided to write a review on it. Now have heard the whole album I stand by my below review:
Madonna needs to come up with a record far more original than 'Hard Candy'. Why should Madonna copy what is already out there? Especially when this 'Timberland' hip hop can sound TOO raw, and emotionally shallow. No more songs about booties please! The track The Beat Goes On and 4 Mins do not compare with catchy, Original Madonna classics such as Like A Virgin, Dress You Up, Papa Don't Preach, Ray Of Light, even Hung Up which used the ABBA sample. Miles away seems unfinished to me though I may have heard an early version. But where is the real emotion heard on Like A Prayer? If Madonna wants to do a fun, urban record why not something with more soul? That, I would treasure as a fan.
From hearing the whole album, the other problem that it is listenable but it almost seems like a collection of B sides with the odd decent track thrown in. She's Not Me has a groovy 80s beat to it, with a mysterious 80s intro and the lyrics are fairly amusing. However, towards the end it speeds up into a dance track, thereby making it sound like an extended remix. Give It To Me is also decent with a good beat, synths and a good attitude but then its spoilt with the breakdown in the middle and one of her guest vocals making a sneaky appearence. In fact, the ego of Timberland is demostrated on this Madonna album as he doesn't seem content with simply producing it, each person she collabourates with has to make a brief vocal appearence on her song. Very irrtiating since it is supposted to be a solo album. Incredible has a too harsh and tinny beat and is spoilt with Madonna squealing the word incredable at the end with of course a odd brief vocal appearence from Pharrell. It strikes me that Madonna does need to grow up now and do something with more ballads and soul. Music is not just for dancing.

Hmmmm.... I guess you could say I'm an old duffer, but remember, I was only 18 when her first album came out ( I loved it!!!). This album in isolation is good. But Madge is trying WAY too hard to be young. She's not. Teaming up with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Kanye West seems desperate. She should just mature with her music... not always try to be 20! She may have a mega bod.... but on the cover she looks like a hard faced slapper in boots!! Good album.... just not Madonna.

Apparently the top four artists ever are as follows :
1) Elvis Presley (never wrote a song his entire career, excellent show-man, completely gorgeous voice and, from what i've witnessed, was pretty amazing in concert, sadly whipped away too early from us.)
2)Cliff Richard (never wrote a song in his life, voice not too bad ,at least not as embarrassing as,like,Val Doonican, or Barry Manilow, but Cliff is as naff as Marie Osmond would be if trying to sound sexy on the phone, and, almost as cheesy as Bombalurina covering a Steps tune, he is however, still alive,i just don't know if i should be thankful for that,i'm pretty sure his fans are.)
3)The Beatles (Four blokes from Liverpool, tuneful, cute, great songs written by varying members but the majority written by either Lennon or MacCartney, great in concert from evidence seen, not great voices but charismatic enough, innovative to the point where nothing since has had that profoundly affecting effect on the general public. All, so far of worthy merit yes?Two are now sadly gone, two remain active and MacCartney's work continues to ,thankfully flourish but not to the dizzying heights it once did.)
Then at number 4 we have...yes,Madonna!!! (Writes her own stuff, collaboratively often, with her producers, who have all attested that her input outweighs their own 10 fold both musically and lyrically, she produces her own material, she tours extensively and vigorously, she DOES sing live but when the dancing and entertainment take a forefront she may lip-synch (yet to be entirely proved though). She's hitting 50 and still going strong and still delivering fantastic material,Hard Candy being her latest offering upholding her standard. Her stardom is most certainly not fading as we can see with each single making the top ten in the UK and most other European countries,Japan,USA and the rest of the world.
Above her are six men in total (Elvis,Cliff and four Beatles). In my opinion,Elvis and Cliff don't deserve their status based simply on the fact that they didn't write their own stuff, which,i believe,is an essential part of whether or not someone has TALENT.So....that leaves The Beatles of which it took two blokes (mainly) to uphold their careers and yes,the beatles deserve their place because i can't deny they were excellent, excellent musicians and the world would probably be a much sadder place without their wonderful contributions to music. This, then, leaves us with a woman whose career has spanned 25 years,is still going strong,is still as popular and who has, seemingly, only been pipped at the post by the biggest BAND the world has ever seen.
One day,the world will mourn the loss of this great, great artist, like we did when Elvis left the building,or when Lennon was stolen from us appallingly.
Like it or not ,she's up there with the best and long may she, undoubtedly, remain the true Queen of Music, may she one day realise her deserved appreciation....

I have nothing but respect for Madonna, 104 years old and still going strong. For every album sold it prolongs her life for an extra fifteen minutes. Buy this album, you're not a murderer, are you?
