Sweet surprise May 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had prepared myself to be disappointed by this CD; after all, the last time Madonna used big name established producers to give her a radio friendly glossy makeover was on the album Bedtime Stories. The less said of that collection the better, but Hard Candy is more than a commercial makeover it's actually a damn fine contemporary dance pop record. Madonna is not lost amongst the usual pops and whistles of Timbaland and Pharrell Williams, she asserts her domination over them on every track. Yes, the lyrics are a tad silly at times, but the musical grooves and Madonna's presence go a long way to make songs like the title track, Give It 2 Me and Heartbeat great. Not bad at all.

Well I have to admit that every Madonna album release is always different in style and content and I have to admire her for that. Madonna always wants to work with the most up to date trends but I think by attaching herself to the distinctive style of JT and Timbaland she has lost some of her originality. I feel she is just copying a trend. I'm sure the album will appeal to a younger audience [which is great] and I've listened to it a few times to 'make myself' like it. I like half the tracks as they are very dancey but a handful I just skip. Still love her stuff and will see her in September at Wembley!
(Almost) total lack of personality May 23, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I rarely add a review but I was disappointed again by Madonna with this album. For me the biggest problem, which is reflected by the guests, is the album just isn't Madonna. Any above average rising pop person could have done this. I have all but perhaps two of her earliest albums and I've liked some of the ones that others have rated rubbish but all of them until this album have been Madonna.
Trouble is I think she is finally quite contented in life and the force of her personality no longer feels the need to project. The couple of decent songs on it do (like "She's Not Me"). Meanwhile "Candy Store"? Duff duff duff.
Excellent, catchy album from the Queen Madge May 22, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well this album sure is different for Madonna, but it's good different. Every song is different, it requires a few listens to fully get into it, but it is really good.
The highlights include: Heartbeat, and excellent catchy track that will have you humming for days.
Miles away, this is a very original track and also very catchy.
She's not me, is my favourite track from the album and is very funky, hopefully a possible single.
Incredible, i didn't think much of this at first but i actually like it a lot now, another possible single. You can see Madge doing a good video for this track.
Beat goes on, definately going to be a single. It is very disco and catchy. Fits in quite well with the other main stream songs out there.
Dance 2 night, this should have been the first single instead of 4 minutes. It is much more better and more catchy.
Devil wouldn't reconigze you, this is a very good track. Sounds very timberland. Maybe a single, like so many other tracks on the album.
Finally, Voices. This song is also very good. So true to life in so many ways. Who is the master and who is the slave?
Now on the weakest part fo the album which in fact is the beginning, candy shop which is just awful and should not have been included on the album and the dissapointing first single 4 minutes. I am also a big fan of JT but this song is not very good at all.
So there you have it, dispite candy shop and 4 minutes this album is very good. I would recommend you buy the album, allthough do give it a few listens before you discredit it like so many others who have given it a review.
Dull dull dull May 22, 2008 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I'm enough of a fan of Madonna to have paid to see her last two concerts, but this album is a let down. Instead of the ground breaking, individual, catchy songs she has brought us in the past, this is an album full of dull, unorginal tracks. This time, Madonna is taking the lead from others, rather than setting the bar herself. The first time I played it, I listened to the first 30 seconds of each song and then skipped to the next. Not one song stood out: there is nothing anywhere near the league of Vogue, Like A Prayer, Music or any of her other rightfully massive hits. I really recommend that unless you are a die hard fan and, like me, prepared to buy the album without having heard it first, that you borrow a copy before parting with your money.
