Sheer brilliance... June 16, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Two men in their circa 60th years have no right making records as brilliant as this; for me it is their BEST EVER record, and have been a fan since Halfnelson.
Highlights are very track, but I love Let The Monkey Drive, She Got Me Pregnant, Photoshop and Likeable.

Hopefully Just a Taster...is that asking too much? June 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sparks consistently shines. This album (hopefully) concludes their trilogy of orchestrated brilliant sometimes lyrically repetitive pop. Russell Mael's voice is beautiful in the intro and myschievious in the song "I can't believe that you would fall for all the crap in this song." If you loved "Lil' Beethoven and Hello Young Lovers then you know this will grow on you and you'll love it too. As a Sparks fan I'm hoping their new critical success paves the way for them to release their 21 night gig live on CD/DVD or amp up their next album with dance numbers like "Armies of the Night" "Sherlock Holmes" "La Dolce Vita." To gripe and gripe their album "Balls" was lovely and met with lukewarm critical success. I hope now that Sparks are critic darlings they have the Balls to detour from this orchestra pop formula. The formula is cool but time for a change and Sparks can always change they made a career out of it. C'mom Ron bust out that Pan Flute from "Now that I own the BBC" I wanna hear "the ghost of Liberace" part 2.
In Awe Of Excellence June 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It may sound like blasphemy, but I firmly believe that Exotic Creatures of the Deep is on a par with Kimono My House and Lil' Beethoven. It bristles with originality and wit - there isn't a dud track and works as a cohesive whole. My first impression was one of awe. How could these musicians have produced such vibrant music, such clever tunes, such memorable and amusing lyrics, when other, younger, bands around them are churnig out such tired, derivative dross? The only answer can be that they are geniuses but also ones dedicated to their craft. I wish critics who rave over Sparks' albums remember them when the end of year review of best albums comes around. They have appallingly short memories and hide behind the latest over-hyped indie bands instead of championing Sparks - pioneers who continue to impress and astound with their music and original lyrics. Let's have a South Bank Show about the brothers Mael - and a front cover of a music mag would be appropriate as well. I want to see the music press educate the public, not pander to the lowest common denominator. Sparks are amazing and their new album shows them on top form. Long may they continue to make albums of this brilliance.
Brave but not as good as hello young lovers June 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had great expectations for this album the only standout tracks are good morning, let the monkey drive. You have to give them credit for pushing bounderies and doing what the hell they feel like doing and going against the usual bland pop/rock hence three stars.
Where do they get all these ideas from? May 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been a fan of Sparks since they first came onto the music scene in the late 70s. They have never failed to amaze me with their original sound and style. They are one band who it is almost impossible to copy, they are unique and amazingly after all these years they have bought out yet another (their 21st) album which is totally unique to any of their others. As always the lyrics are original and so tongue in cheek. Who would ever think of writing a song for a man to sing called 'She got me pregnant'? Or how about 'Lighten up Morrissey'? These are brilliant tracks as are all the rest. I never tire of listening to Sparks, whether it is their first album or the most recent. They all sound current, they do not date. Their first album 'Kimono My House' would have been a smash hit if released now. This new album will be a big hit and well deserved, it is original, clever and not only great fun to listen to musically, but if you listen to the words you can have a bit of a laugh too.
