4 out of 5 stars I really thought this would be disappointing   June 4, 2008
How wrong I was. Whilst the debut Wait For Me was a pretty decent guitar record, it was certainly not perfect. Many bands that have a little success are unable to build on that, and after hearing the band boast that they've already finished material for a third album I was sceptical about the quality of number 2.

That said, I actually think they've slightly surpassed themselves. Sure, the CD won't be in your player for months to come, but it will be constantly be playing for the next few weeks - more-so if the weather stays fine. Good job lads.

This album by Pigeon Detectives is good. Really good. I thought the last one by Pigeon Detectives was good but this really is the GOOD STUFF! I can't wait to tell my friends at school about this - the new Pigeon Detective's album - they'll be gutted because my music is good and theirs is not. What's good about this band (Pigeon Detectives) is their name Pigeon Detectives and the songs, the way they shout all the choruses and play the guitars all fast and angry like they mean it and the lead singer's hair - he is well fit. That is why I like Pigeon Detectives best. I liked Kooks before but Pigeon Detectives are just the best. Listening to Pigeon Detectives is like Kooks playing with Fratellis but only twice as better. I bought Fratellis last album because my mate said they were all friends with the little fat one and they might do a collaboration (that would be SICK!) but I stand by this album Emergency as the best album ever. Album of the year deffo.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as I hoped.   May 31, 2008

I loved 'Wait for Me', the first album by the Pigeon Detectives. Almost every tune was catchy, with a strong chorus and a sing-a-long quality that makes every listening equally enjoyable. I had high hopes, therefore, for 'Emergency', the second album by the same band.

And it's good. Tracks like "She's gone" and "I'm a Liar" are toe-tappingly great, and you'll be humming them all day. The album is also more diverse, which might not necessarily be a good thing: there are a few slower numbers that, although decent enough, aren't quite the Pigeon Detectives' forte.

What I was disappointed with was the way that with some songs, they seem to have lost their ability to fashion a sing-a-long chorus, but with others, they try too hard to make it so. For example, "I'm a Liar" features one of the best verses you'll here from the Detectives, but it's somewhat spoiled by the forced "Ba-da-dum!" chorus. Still a great song, but not as fantastic as it could've been.

And that sums up the whole album really. It's by no means bad - none of the songs are tedious or boring, and there a few absolute gems. In fact, it's good. But there was the potential for it to be great, and that has in many places been missed.

Bear in mind that this is all a matter of taste. Many listeners may love the different style of chorus, or the slower songs, and that's fine. But for me personally, "Emergency" wasn't as brilliant as I had originally hoped.

4 out of 5 stars Phew, Curse of the dull second album avoided   May 28, 2008

I was worried there. Just as I thought I'd outgrown indie with its troop of dull soundalike bands, the Pigeon Detective's first album was just a bit too good to dismiss with the rest of them. And I had a horrible feeling this album would be a copycat of that and they would be thrown out as quickly as the top 40s flirtation with indie had been. But its not. The first two songs are good but don't raise any hopes. But 'Keep on your dress' and 'Don't you wanna find out?' show how this band has matured and endeavoured to evolve as a band while remaining true to their fans. And the rest of the album is just as good. The lyrics are as keen as they were in 'Take Her Back' and the guitars as crazy as they were all throughout the last album. The songs are more distinguishable, having different tempos and different guitar sounds, perhaps there could be a few singles out of this. The last album had a habit of merging into one sound. I like this band and have a feeling they'll be around for a few years to come.
