The Pits June 13, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I recently took delivery of this album and frankly I wish I hadn't. While the guitar work is good the whole album (for me) is lack lustre and very boring. It all sounds the same. Never again Sonny.
guitar heaven! June 11, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
its been awhile since ive been mesmerised by a cd but this one goes way past that.to say sonny is probably the greatest guitarist alive would be an understatement.like the last 2 reviewers, hes more than ably helped out by a few admirers and no doubt we'll all have our favourites but this is an absolutely great guitar album, the likes i havn't heard in years.beg steal or borrow this cd you will not be disappointed ,even better buy it and have the real thing.
Back to top form June 2, 2008 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
One of the biggest disappointments in life is to pay your money and the CD just does not reach the mark and you know that it never will no matter how many times you play it. Sadly this is happening too many times these days; a sign of age perhaps? So it was with a little trepidation that I purchased the new Sonny Landreth CD, especially as I had been a little disapponted with his previous two offerings (The Road We're On and Grant Street). Also, a supreme guest list does not always produce the sum of all parts. I really should have more faith sometimes in quality musicians. A new label can sometimes result in a return to form and this is definitely the case here. The guests (Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Dr John etc.) play a full participating part in the wonderful proceedings taking place within this CD and happily they are not being merely mentioned in dispatches. There are some really inspired moments that really lift this CD from the average tinkerings being generated by the masses of modern musicians parading themselves as Rock music's salvation. I haven't enjoyed a newly released CD in such a long time and I can almost feel myself dancing and feeling years younger. Now that is something!! My final summing up, absolutely stunning stuff.
Caution.....Maestro's At work! May 28, 2008 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
The eagerly awaited album from slide king, Sonny Landreth, this time ably abetted by a number of his musical mates! Now normally, an album such as this would be a jam in the studios, all attempting to outdo the "host" - not so this album. Indeed, many of the players here hold Mr Landreth in awe and therefore rather than attempting to show off, they are more than comfortable to play their supporting roles to produce an absolutely glorious sound. Indeed, if anything, Mr Landreth succeeds in extracting the very best from each of the musicians involved (and remember we are talking Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler - so no lack of talent here!) The album kicks off with Blue Tarp Blues with Mark Knopfler acting as foil to a mid-paced, Dire Straits reminiscent, tune and this sets the standard for what is to follow. "When I Still Had You","Way Past Long" all keeping up the pace with both Robben Ford and Eric Clapton turning in some excellent soloing - and then we hit one of the instrumentals that Sonny occasionally tosses into the mix and on this ("The Milky Way Home") we find Eric Johnson on fire....and if you want to hear guitar heaven, then this is about as close as it gets - beautiful and understated but played with a fantastic hard edged delivery! Still only one day in my CD player but this album has truly blown me away, I can see little chance of anything else getting a look in over the coming weeks as I take in every little nuance, every inflection of this superb album. If you've never heard of this guy - you'll be amazed at the sound this man generates. If you're already aware of him, then you don't need to be told. Just BUY!
