3 out of 5 stars Doesn't represent the true power of Queen   March 11, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

If you're a collector, who wouldn't mind buying 5-6 albums when you really like a band, then don't buy this. If you however are just interested in their most well known songs, like Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, We Are The Champions...etc, then this might be worth your money.

Greatest Hits I
This collection isn't fair to their early material. This is like making a 15 song compilation for The Beatles from Rubber Soul to Let It Be, or for Led Zeppelin throughout their entire career. You simply can't make a fair Queen compilation from 73 to 80 on one CD only.
If this would be a 2CD-compilation from 73 to 80, I would remove Flash's Theme, and add the following songs, for a total of 17+17 songs.
Keep Yourself Alive, Doing All Right, Liar, Father To Son, White Queen, Ogre Battle, Nevermore, Brighton Rock, In the Lap of the Gods, Stone Cold Crazy, Death On Two Legs, 39, Love of My Life, Tie Your Mother Down, You Take My Breath Away, More of That Jazz, Dragon Attack and Sail Away Sweet Sister.
That would be fair to the early Queen.

Greatest Hits II
Queen in the 80's developed into a single oriented band, so this is a great compilation for their late years. But where's Bijou?

I have to say I don't see the point in Greatest Hits III, but some songs like You Don't Fool Me and Princes of the Universe are worth listening to, atleast.

I would only recommend this if you're into the late Queen material. And then take a look at their 70's studio albums, from Queen(1973) to The Game(1980).

5 out of 5 stars QUEEN ROCK!   January 25, 2008
This is amazing. It is one of the best albums in the world, ever! WOW!!! Most people will like this, except those who are not Queen Fans. But i recommend that everyone should give it a try as it is brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Too much middle of the road   January 23, 2008
Early Queen up to the late-70's is simply some of the best, pop-rock ever produced. However, later material becomes middle of the road, predictable and sometimes down-right embarrassing (Radio Gaga).

A great band at their peak, but later material represented here makes this an overblown product.
Stick to the earlier stuff and you won't go far wrong.

5 out of 5 stars If Queen is a Religon then heres the Bible!   January 16, 2008

Emerging from the smog of glam rock, pop and Led Zeppelin, Queen burst on to the music scene with all the bombast of a volcano sprouting from the core of the Earth. Freddie Mercury, the front man who had the voice, had the flamboyance and had the knack of feeding an audience from the palm of his hand. Brian May, the guitarist who reminded every one of Hendrix before him, with his ever recognizable style of playing and his infectious guitar solos. Roger Taylor, the drummer, the boy racer of the band, charming, and forever yielding speed and power when it comes to playing drums. Then there is John Deacon, the quiet one, the family man, who created some of the most recognizable bass tunes in the world. But it wasn't just their personalities or personal qualities that made them into the biggest band of all time, but they also liked different things, and all brought lyrical contributions to the table. Freddie wrote the love songs and the ridiculous ones; 'Somebody to Love', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'We are the champions', 'It's a Hard Life' etc. Brian wrote the heavier tracks; 'Hammer to fall', 'We Will Rock you' 'and Now I'm Here'. Roger wrote the pop songs; 'A Kind of Magic', 'Radio Ga Ga' and 'Heaven for Everyone'. Finally John wrote the funkier songs; 'Another One Bites the Dust' and 'I Want to Break Free'. But it was when Queen collaborated as one, when they capitalised their creative masterminds, epics such as 'innuendo', raging concert openers like 'One vision' and Ibiza floor fillers like 'You Don't Fool Me', proving that they can adapt to any music genre within reason and becoming a pioneer of rock credibility the world over.
So let it be said, that any compilation of this size (3CD's) is sure to be packed with hit after hit after hit. And that's just what it delivers. The first CD is the 1982 greatest hits album, which in its self has sold over 10 millions records worldwide and officially the biggest selling album in British History, with an astonishing 5.5 million sales. That could well be something to do with the fact that it contains Queen's flawless early years, infectious pop in the form of 'Don't Stop Me Now', along with the aforementionable 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and the enchanting 'Bicycle Race'. It's Inspiring stuff.
But if the first disc didn't wet your appetite then, the second is likely to blow you away with its sheer power and ingenuity. Lyrics reflecting on varies situations in everyday life; the effects of love in 'Its a Hard Life', the state of media 'Radio Ga Ga', the stresses of unemployment 'Under Pressure'. What more could any one want to make a psychoanalyses of their own life, or capture the mood with a song to fit the situation just perfectly.
The third disc is the most intriguing, a mash up of solo projects, collaborations and remixes, despite this its essential in every sense of the word, for Freddie's solo work does echo the brilliance of Queen songs, with dance tracks such as 'Living on my Own' and operatic splendidy in the form of 'Barcelona'. Then there is Brian's 'Driven by You', from that infamous car commercial. But it is the tracks from 'Made in Heaven' which really energize the atmosphere with tracks as thought provoking as 'Too much Love will Kill You'. And just when you thought that they had crossed every possible genre, they go into hip-hop territory with Wyclef Jean's remix of 'Another One Bites the Dust'. The album ends on a tearful and very poignant goodbye from Freddie in the song 'These are the Days of our Lives', a song recorded not long before his death.
Cascaded in the realms of pop rock royalty, Queen have not just revolutionised the way we hear music but created their own unique genre of diversity and trademark, all the way from the unmistakable riff of 'A Kind of Magic' to the Queen crest pasted over the front cover. What is more it is true that Queen are no longer a four piece, but the two founding members (Brian and Roger) along with Paul Rodgers are on the verge of a 16th studio album, showing that after 38 years they have still got it. It is certainly true that this album isn't without its emissions; 'Tie Your Mother Down', 'Brighton Rock', 'Backchat' and 'keep Yourself Alive', just but to name a few. But none the less this is the music that will live forever, with Freddie's Godly spirit, religious like fan admiration and timeless rock, this is truly Queen's Bible.
