4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but cracking nonetheless   July 29, 2008

In one sentence, it's better than Ghosts but it's no Year Zero.

But then, very few records, EVER, are better than Year Zero. And as music fans, we can't expect every band to top their last album, as that is a sad impossibility. Still, The Slip is a worthy successor, in as much as it's very good really. It just doesn't have the depth or scope of Reznor's earlier work.

Stylistically it follows the logical path the last two albums set, with the stark, raw instrumentation of YZ and the eerie soundscaping of Ghosts. Some of the songs have shades of past work, most noticeably "1,000,000" and "Discipline", but for the most part there's enough new sound to make the album feel like a progression.

The DVD features the band during rehearsals, playing what are destined to become the five most memorable songs on the album. The performance is spot on, good enough to be released in itself as a studio work. The vibe of experimentation is prominent, with each band member tackling several different instruments and gizmos over the course of the 20-minute set. The packaging, an individually numbered digipak, is continuous with the high level of quality of all NIN releases. Oh, and it has STICKERS, too!

The Downward Spiral, The Fragile, With Teeth and Year Zero all had plenty of time in between to develop, for ideas and concepts to form. Silly as it sounds, in comparison with those records, The Slip is just... an album. Of new music. A compact disc with ten songs on it. The most positive thing to come from this is the realisation that at heart, Reznor is still a musician first and foremost, and he cannot be expected to just redefine business models and nothing more. Every now and then, we can expect something simple. Not an alternate-reality, multimedia masterpiece, or a two-disc instrumental experiment. Just an album. Some great rock music and nothing more. This realisation is both disappointing and hugely relieving at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars up there with the downward spiral and fragile   July 28, 2008

With Trent Reznor coming back from the brink of obscurity from drugs to make a kick ass hell of an album with NIN's The Slip prove you can never teach an old dog new tricks which combined with the return of Robin Finck to the fold who puts himself to good use on tracks like "Head Down", "Lights in the Sky" as well as the superb track "1,000,000" and "Letting you" and finally "Discipline" which proves atleast he is making better use of his ability as a guitarist without wasting it to the still long awaited album release of Axl Rose and G'N'R's CHINESE DEMOCRACY which without a doubt will see his guitar parts being wiped off future recordings since Axl has a somewhat topsy-turvy relationship with guitarists.

OK I only went in for the free download, never having bothered much about NIN before, but I'll tell you what; The Reznor marketing ploy - if that is what it was, worked because on the back of this I have bought another 4 previous releases with more to follow.

Surprisingly (to me) mellow and tuneful but with a fair bit of "grunt" attached as well, this is quite simply an outstanding, mature and downright enjoyable release which you will listen to again and again. What have I been missing?

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back Robin!!   July 25, 2008
This new album is great, i'm so pleased to see Robin back in the line up writing with Trent!
Persoanlly i think this is a return to form for NIN i can't wait to pick this up on Monday 28th!
These digipaks will are limited to 250,000 pieces only so get them while you can, especially if you're a halo collector!

I'll admit, im a 'fan' of NIN (I stayed up until 5:30 in the morning waiting for this album to arrive) and i must say, given the nature of ghosts and year zero i didnt really know what to expect, except the two tracks from the album i'd already heard

...I was extremely impressed.

I own just about every halo (including DVD's and singles) and this is by far up with my favourites.

Ill start off with its musical style: it starts off with a track much like one you would find on GHOSTS, haunting and dramatic, but its the way it bleeds into my favourite track of the album, 1.000.000, that gets me everytime, its with 1.000.000 that this album begins as a work of art. The music itself is very new sounding compared to other works by Reznor, it doesnt have that rusty sound of BROKEN/THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL but its lyrical themes are identical (themes of struggle and self realisation in what can only be said as trent's topsy turvey life), It doesnt have the poppy feel of tracks off of PRETTY HATE MACHINE (but again, the lyrical themes are strikingly similiar), if i was forced to compare this album to anything, then it would be a hybrid between WITH_TEETH and YEAR ZERO, its musical style is very smiliar to YEAR ZERO but its lyrical themes are identical to WITH_TEETH. After 1.000.000 you are definitely into a very moveable album, from upbeat songs such as electronic anthem DISCIPLINE to the extremely serene LIGHTS IN THE SKY theres is DEFINITELY something for every NIN fan here, and this is where trent has succeded the most, bringing you bits and pieces from his history and mashing them all up into one cataclismic album which simply emits genius and potential to be a staple product in the HALO catalogue. The 1 song which i didnt get into as much was corona radiata, it's is an amazing song, but in order to listen to it and enjoy it you have to listen to the album from beginning to end, with this song in its respective place, it isnt a song you could just put on and listen to, unlike the rest of the album which i find very listenable!

Then again its always better to listen to a NIN album from beginning to end anyway, otherwise you dont absorb the story!

All i can say is masterpiece, if you wanna find out for yourself then just give it a try first by downloading it for free from NIN.COM, otherwise it is DEFINITELY worth the buy, and a great addition to ANY NIN fans collection.
