Jay-Z: Reasonable Doubt April 25, 2003 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Like a lot of people I heard "Izzo (H.O.V.A)" and "Girls, Girls, Girls" and they just didn't appeal to me. Then I saw an interview with Jay-Z on MTV and they played a snippet of the video for "Dead Presidents" and I was suprised by how much I liked it. When I saw the price of the CD, I had no problem paying out for it. I'm under no illusions that the best tracks on the album are "Can't Knock the Hustle","Dead Presidents" and "Ain't no.." with Foxxy Brown, but I made the error of basically listening to these three tracks on loop on the first four months of having this album. It was only when I listened to the entire album that I began to appreciate how good the CD actually is. In my opinion tracks 1 through 9 are all brilliant then perhaps it slows down a bit but comes back in a big way for the brilliant "Regrets". I can't say anything that hasn't been said, even if you don't like Jay-Z's current persona you will enjoy this album.
A GOOD Jay-Z album August 31, 2002 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
It seems most if not all of the true hip hop heads don't like Jay-Z. Me being one of them. I've never felt any of Jigga's tracks and have often hated on him, but that's probably because now he is too 'pop'. But then I hear his 1996 debut 'Reasonable Doubt' is apparantly one of the best rap albums ever and I actually bought it, and I thought I'd lost my mind buying an album by Jay-Z.Enough waffling, this is an incredible CD with SICK beats and intelligent lyrics with great flows. I especially like the duet with Biggie, 'Brooklyn's Finest', 'D'Evils' and 'Can't Knock The Hustle'. That's not to say the other tracks aren't as good because there is barely a bad track on this album. Now trust me: Buy this album even if you DON'T like Jay-Z! You won't regret it!
You, definitely can't ''Knock The Hustle''. April 8, 2002 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an album that I have heard about for years and finally have. One thing I can say is that the stand out tracks ''Can't Knock the Hustle'' and ''Can I Live'' are probably the finest hip-hop tracks of all time as well as ''Ain't No Nigga'' which is another classic, I have listened to each about 15 times already, others include the BIG featured ''Brooklyn's Finest'', Dead President II and ''Feelin It'' . This is an album that I cannot get enough of and a stand out in mine and any credible hip-hop fan's collection
The Album that keeps Jay-Z amongst the greats.... March 23, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
You either love or hate Jay-Z. Anyone who heard his pathetic In My Lifetime Volume 1 will revile him. But if you heard this first, you will adore this MC. Hard narratives, phenomenal beats (check Premier on "D'evils", Clark Kent on "Brooklyn's Finest") puts this near the top and demonstrate why Jay-Z is still allowed to exist in the rap world. Had he not produced this gem, Volume 3 might never have been thought of.
